Socialization is the term used by psychologists, scientists, and educators referring to the constructions of stereotypes, and social position based on a persons values, behavior, and social skills. This process has formed our society into monstrosity; however, without socialization our society would crumble as a result of the change. Socialization has made me the person I am today; like everyone else, I was born into an already corrupt social system, but in time I learned to embrace my socialization. People constantly express their desire for a change, yet nobody does anything to even attempt said change. Through trial and error, I have learned that it is unacceptable to be more than one thing in our society, so in order to do my part in the change (the one that probably will never come) I do my best to be more than my stereotype.
Over a few weeks, my class and I constructed an essay and a mask portraying how we have been socialized, and ho the process of socialization has effected us. My essay describes how I have been personally victimized by the process of socialization as a white female. The right half of my mask is covered by white lace over lavender paint; the color of the lace represents my skin color, the purple paint symbolizes peoples refusal to look past another persons skin color, or what they wear to see inside of a person. Because it is a very feminine fashion trend, I selected lace to represent my femininity, and my preference for girly trends. The left half of my mask is covered in pages from a book, symbolizing my love for reading and literature. Essentially, my mask represents how over time I have learned to embrace my stereotype, and be myself.
In writing my essay, I have not only begun a journey of self discovery, but grown as a writer as well. As a class, we constructed an original draft of our essay, shared it with Matt as well as our class, received feedback, and edited our essays based on our feedback: We repeated this process multiple times until our essays were flawless. This process has helped me grow as a writer because it demonstrated the importance of feedback, and revisions.
Having started the school year late, my mask project is my only major assignment completed so far. However, I believe that I did an excellent job portraying advocacy throughout my essay and in my ideas in general. In order to improve, I believe it would be beneficial to ask more questions to increase my awareness of the given assignment or project.
